Another week of wintry weather here so I thought I’d try and capture some snowflakes in close up using my macro lens. I got up early, wrapped myself up warm and headed out with my camera. However as is often the way with photography Mother Nature had different plans and the snow was too soft and wet to let me separate out individual snowflakes. Oh well I still spent a lovely hour wandering around our village photographing cold ice and sparkly snow.

All photos taken with my Nikon D700 and my 105mm Nikkor f2.8 Micro (Macro) lens. To take decent macro shots you really need to use a tripod, mine here were all hand held and are more close up shots rather than true macro. With the exception of the photo of the broken snowflake none of the photos have been cropped, I used manual focus and that let me get within about 10cm of my subject. To give you an idea of scale this photo is a pull back from the first 2 images – can you spot my ice water droplet right in the centre of the frame?

This is what I love about macro photography, the way you can get in close and find beauty in objects you would normally never notice.

Gorgeous!! Loved the pullback, that one photo alone has made me realise not to dismiss some of the shots I have taken and to look closer at the little things as the first image is so beautiful!
